A new study has found that California’s Salton Sea is releasing hydrogen sulfide—a toxic, foul-smelling gas—at levels that routinely exceed state air quality standards. Researchers say these emissions are significantly underrepresented by current government monitoring systems, leaving nearby communities vulnerable.
Published in the journal GeoHealth, the study highlights the environmental and health risks faced by populations living around the Salton Sea. These communities, already experiencing social and ecological stress, are on what researchers describe as the “front lines” of a growing environmental health crisis.

“The communities around the Salton Sea are on the front lines of a worsening environmental health crisis,” said Mara Freilich, co-author of the study and assistant professor in the Department of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences at Brown University. “Our study shows that hydrogen sulfide emissions are not only more intense than previous monitoring captured, but they are systematically underreported—especially when sensors are placed away from the lake or out of alignment with prevailing winds.”
